What is wellness coaching and lifestyle medicine? Great question. It's really the foundation of conventional medicine and preventative care in its purest form. The focus on eating well, exercise, quality sleep, stress reduction/management, substance use, and forming quality social relationships are all factors in our wellness.
Wellness coaching provides one-on-one discussion to create a unique plan to help you achieve your health and wellness goals which can include one or all of the topics below.
Why is this important? Various types of chronic illness have been linked to lifestyle choices. Working with a wellness plan can help prevent, manage and sometimes even reverse the course of chronic illness.
Healthful eating has already been established as a way to manage many chronic conditions. Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate all the recommendations available to us. Food choices can also be a wonderful part of preventative care.
We all have a relationship with food and likely have at least one or two things, if not more, that we would like to change about that relationship. Working together we can find a plan that fits your lifestyle and goals.
Botanical support can also be a powerful addition to nutritional choices and are an option to incorporate into your personalized plan.
Movement and exercise are so important to help us be and feel our best. Coming up with a doable fitness plan is part of wellness coaching. This is going to look different for each person and the beauty is that there is no one 'right' way to approach incorporating exercise into your life. Accountability and check-ins are part of coaching and help to keep you on track to meet your goals!
Working in Pulmonary Medicine sleep is near and dear to my heart. We all need sleep to function, but we need restorative sleep to function and be well.
Sleep habits, bedtime routines, schedules, environment are all factors in the sleep we are able to get each night. Screening for and management of sleep disorders is also key to getting a good night of rest.
Delving into your sleep habits and patterns is part of your wellness plan. Sleep is also another area where botanical medicine can be incorporated if desired.
Stress management techniques are as varied as personalities. I personally like fuzzy socks and a warm fire with a loved one after stressful days but other times need to get an endorphin release with a good run or ski.
Wellness coaching takes into account your current stress management style and builds off of it or offers ideas for adjustment.
Sometimes stress management is also having a safe place to vent and a friendly ear to help guide us on a healthful path.
Botanical medicine also offers support for stress , both acute and chronic, and can be part of your plan!
Traditionally, substance use focused on the things we ingest: alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, THC, etc. In today's world there is an addition to this list that is not physically ingested- media.
Wellness coaching in this area will focus on those habits we wish to break away from in our daily lives. Whether it is for a more moderate intake of some of these things, complete cessation, or occasional use. We will work together to formulate a plan that is sustainable for your long term goals.
Home, work, and friend circles affect how we interact with ourselves and the world around us. Setting and maintaining healthy boundaries so that we can function in a healthy way within our chosen circles is an important part of wellness.
The way we view ourselves, our 'inner-talk', is a focus in lifestyle medicine. Being our own advocate for the small and big things in life set us up for success. Learning these strategies and taking control of your power are integral in the evolution to the best version of yourself.
